August Briggs Wines

August Briggs Wines The heart of August Briggs Wines is winemaker August "Joe" Briggs. Joe received his degree in enology from Fresno State University in 1984. He then went on to acquire a diverse range of winemaking skills in the 80’s and 90’s at wineries in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and the Central Valley of California. While working at La Crema Winery in the early 90’s, Joe continued to explore an interest in pinot noir that was sparked during his time in Oregon. With an eye towards making wine in the Napa Valley, which he visited with friends during college, he began a career as a self-described “gun for hire,” a freelance winemaking consultant. Success and a growing reputation during this period allowed Joe to make the leap from consultant to proprietor; in 1995 Briggs & Sons Winemaking Company released three wines under the August Briggs label - two pinot noirs and a zinfandel. These were the first bottlings under what would soon become one of California’s most respected, artisanal labels. I in 2002, in an even more ambitious step, Joe purchased a piece of property on the Silverado Trail in Calistoga and began work on a state-of-the-art winery. Now, in 2004, with the finishing touches applied, August Briggs Winery is humming with activity as it attracts visitors from around California, the United States, and the world. Joe’s longtime goal to make great wines his own way - and under his own roof - has finally been realized.

  Carneros 'Leveroni Vineyards' Chardonnay
The 2004 August Briggs Carneros "Leveroni Vineyards" Chardonnay is our eighth release from this highly acclaimed family owned vineyard, Small crop levels, coupled with a long, even growing season allowed these thirty year old vines to produce fruit with intense aromas of pear, peach and fig, as well as, flavors of citrus, cream and honey. Well balanced with a great clean finish this chardonnay is ready for tasting in large quantities. While it lasts!
  Carneros Pinot Noir
The 2004 August Briggs Carneros Pinot Noir is our seventh vintage of this wonderful pinot noir wine. Grapes for this wine come from the heart of Carneros just southeast of the city of Napa. The vineyard runs rolling hills to gravelly rever bottom which imparts aromas of black cherry, mushroom, and earth. Medium bodied with a firm finish, this wine is somewhat Burgundian which pairs well with lamb and turkey for a most pleasant experience.
Dry Creek Two Moon Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2003 vintage represents August Briggs’ first release of this vineyard designated Cabernet Sauvignon from Stan Simpson’s remote “Two Moon Vineyard”. Located on a steep slope in the western mountains above the Dry Creek Valley floor, this vineyard is appealing because of it’s razor thin soils and high altitude. All of these factors add up to a minimal crop level which produces high intensity fruit with substantial tannins.
  Lake County Petite Sirah
The 2004 August Briggs Lake County Petite Sirah is our third vintage from this beautiful Lake County vineyard, This full bodied wine was produced from Black Rock vineyard located in the red hills between Lakeport and the city of Lower Lake off the southern shore of Clear Lake. This vineyard is quite unique being planted on a bed of broken obsidian and dark red soil. The vines are head trained in the old style, thus yielding two to three tons per acre. Very dark in color, cola & dark fruit aromas, with black berry & black cherry flavors. This petite sirah is traditional in style with a solid fruit core followed by a mounthful of intense flavors and smooth tannin. 10% zinfandel was blended in for roundness. Beef steak recommended as a side dish!
  Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon
This 2003 vintage represents August Briggs second release of this vineyard designated Cabernet. Due to the moderate crop level and long ripening season this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is dark purple in color, full-bodied, & complex with forward fruit flavors of blackberry, blueberry, & coco. Big and smooth! A true mountain CAB.
  Napa "Dijon Clones" Pinot Noir
The 2004 August Briggs Napa Valley "Dijon Clones" Pinot Noir is our seventh vintage of this pinot noir since forming the company in 1995. This wine comes from the Green Island Road Vineyard, which is planted at the bay's edge in the very south end of the Napa Valley on the eastern border of Carneros (very cool & breezy). Black berry & cherry fruit aromas combined with sweet vanilla, finishing with a full mouth and lasting flavor. With it's defined structure this wine will age well through the end of the decade.
  Napa Cabernet Sauvignon
This 2003 vintage represents August Briggs seventh release of Napa Valley Cabernet. Due to moderate crop levels and a long ripening season this Mountain Cabernet is deep & dark, with a solid tannin structure and plenty of flavor. Aromas consist ofcoco, cola, earth, and vanilla. This cabernet is big, but approachable. Mucho Flavor!
  Napa Valley Charbono
  Napa Valley Syrah
Almost black in color, this wine is powerful in flavor as well as aroma. Hints of blackberry, cherry and dark chocolate combined with a solid structure and full of body. While being smooth and Silky in the mouth with a great, never ending finish this wine will last for many years to come. Bold! 390 cases produced
  Napa Valley Zinfandel
Black in color with aromas of black cherry, blackberry, spice, smoke and a hint of pepper. This is an old style Zinfandel with a ripe core of fruit and a good backbone of tannin, thus matching well with heavier food dishes.
  Pinot Meunier
Very aromatic with strawberry and raspberry fruit upfront as in pinot noir, as well as, a spicy, blueberry core as found in Rhone varieties. This wine makes a great porch quaffer, as well as, a perfect match with light to medium menu items.
  Russian River Chardonnay
A very small crop, coupled with an even growing season, these twenty five year old vines produced fruit with intense pear and green apple aromas as well as flavors of melon, citrus and vanilla. This wine is quite well balanced, with a distinct mineral quality. 120 cases produced.
  Russian River Pinot Noir
Raspberry & strawberry aromas, combined with a hint of smoky oak and earth. Well balanced with a full finish makes this complex wine one to enjoy with all meals.
  Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Cherry, raspberry, & plum aromas combined with toasty, smoky oak. Deep smooth mouth and a long lasting finish. Great structure that will match well with pork, lamb, and duck.
