August Briggs Wines
|
|
The heart of August Briggs Wines is winemaker August "Joe" Briggs. Joe received his degree in enology from Fresno State University in 1984. He then went on to acquire a diverse range of winemaking skills in the 80’s and 90’s at wineries in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and the Central Valley of California. While working at La Crema Winery in the early 90’s, Joe continued to explore an interest in pinot noir that was sparked during his time in Oregon. With an eye towards making wine in the Napa Valley, which he visited with friends during college, he began a career as a self-described “gun for hire,” a freelance winemaking consultant. Success and a growing reputation during this period allowed Joe to make the leap from consultant to proprietor; in 1995 Briggs & Sons Winemaking Company released three wines under the August Briggs label - two pinot noirs and a zinfandel. These were the first bottlings under what would soon become one of California’s most respected, artisanal labels. I in 2002, in an even more ambitious step, Joe purchased a piece of property on the Silverado Trail in Calistoga and began work on a state-of-the-art winery. Now, in 2004, with the finishing touches applied, August Briggs Winery is humming with activity as it attracts visitors from around California, the United States, and the world. Joe’s longtime goal to make great wines his own way - and under his own roof - has finally been realized.
