Kalamar Winery

Kalamar Winery Located on Lake Tapps, this unique winery produces exclusively "reds", notably Merlot. The grapes are grown in Eastern Washington's premier vineyards and are hand picked. The wine is produced and bottled by hand, in limited quantities. Inspired by his late Uncle Fred Terrile, who made wine for over 50 years, winemaker Mark Kalamar is committed to producing world class premium wines in the time honored tradition of many of his family before him. The label is a painting of Mark and Lisa's wedding reception done by Mark's brother Greg Kalamar. Current production is 500+ cases per year. The winery maintains a limited mailing list for those interested in Kalamar wines.

Products

  Single Barrel Reserve Merlot
Winemaker, Mark Kalamar selected the best barrel from the 2000 vintage and bottled a very limited quantity of this wine in 1.5 liter sand-carved hand painted bottles.
  Yakima Valley Merlot
2002 was another superb growing season that ripened the grapes to perfection in the warm sunny days and cool fall nights of the Yakima Valley. Harvested by hand from two vineyards near "Red Mountain" the grapes were then transported to Kalamar Winery. There they were fermented in small open top fermentation tanks for 7 days. Then the wine was basket pressed into French and American oak barrels and aged for 23 months. A rich dense Merlot with ripe flavor and gentle texture. Firm tannins support lively black cherry and currant fruit along with the subtle shadings of black pepper and cedar. The fruit on the long complex finish that keeps pumping out the flavors.
  Yakima Valley Syrah
2002 was another superb growing season that ripened the grapes to perfection in the warm sunny days and cool fall nights of the Yakima Valley. Harvested by hand from Pleasant Vineyard near Prosser the grapes were then transported to Kalamar Winery. There they were fermented in small open top fermentation tanks for 8 days. Then the wine was basket pressed into French and American oak barrels and aged for 23 months. A complex elegant Syrah crafted in Old World style. Well rounded tannins support ripe pie cherries and plumbs with a hint of pipe tobacco and cola on the nose. Inside raspberry and blackpepper leads to a blackberry finish with great acidity.
