Kamen Estate Wines
|
|
Kamen Estate is located at elevations reaching 1100' in the southwestern Mayacamas Range, where some of the most sought after Cabernet Sauvignon in California is grown. The official appellation is Sonoma Valley, a smaller sub-appellation of Sonoma County. More specifically, the vineyards are on the southwestern slopes of Mt. Veeder, with the Napa County line less than a quarter of a mile away. Forty acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and the blending varieties of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot are organically farmed along the contours of hillsides where slopes often exceed 40% grade. This terrain was formed by ancient volcanic activity, and the soils are geologically diverse, providing a complex range of growing conditions within a single vine row. Yields never reach more than a scarce 1.5 tons, per acre, due to the extremely rocky environment and the viticultural practice of dropping fruit for maximum flavor and concentration. Hallmarks of the weather during the growing season are cool, foggy mornings followed by very hot afternoons. The San Pablo Bay opens just below and brings in cool air during the heat of the summer. It also pulls in winter storms carrying rains that replenish the water table. The microclimate, classified as a mid-Region III in the U. C. Davis heat summation system, is very similar to the Rutherford Bench.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Winemaker Mark Herold comments, "The heat of May and June reduced the berry size of Cabernet Sauvignon and the ratio of skin thickness to juice was increased, therefore it was not suprising to see what has become a hallmark of the 2001 harvest- wines with terrific extraction of immense color and great intensity of flavor. The aromas of the 2001 Kamen Cabernet are very expressive with big complex, dark, juicy black fruits of blackberries, black raspberries and plums interlaced with notes of violets, minerals and hints of coffee, spice and toasty oak.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Winemaker Mark Herold comments,"Aromas of sweet blackberries, dark cherries and plums leap out of the glass and are interlaced with notes of violets, cinnamon, nutmeg and coca dust. The mouth has a beautiful rounded entry and intense concentration of fruit with a recurrence of dense dark fruits suggested in the aroma-blackberries, ripe cassis and dark plum. Ripe, silky tannins seamlessly support the stucture rendering an elegant, complex wine. This wine is very lively and vibrant on the palate, with ripe full flavors and a distinctly long and lingering finish, a true expression of the estate vineyard from which it is grown.
