Kunde Estate Winery

Kunde Estate Winery Founder Louis Kunde emigrated to California from Germany in 1884 and settled in Sonoma County. In 1904, he bought James Shaw's Wildwood Vineyards, which had first been planted in 1879. Louis Kunde made quite a name for himself in California wine circles, frequently being consulted and quoted by the press, and winning numerous awards for his "Wildwood Vineyards" wine. The Kunde family has a history unsurpassed in the grape growing and wine making industries of California. Since 1904, four generations of Kundes have lived, worked, and produced award winning wines and grapes on the same property in the Sonoma Valley. Shown here are Louis and "future winery founder" Bob Kunde. Presently, the day to day operations of the vineyards and winery are handled by Bob and Fred's children - Bill, Jeff, Keith, Marcia, and Kurt. It was their enthusiasm that led to the decision to build the new Kunde Estate Winery and their involvement with all aspects of the business that ensures it will continue to be a family enterprise.

  Blossom's Rose
"What a beauty! Sure, Blossom the Cow is cute, but just wait until you get a good look at the 2007 Kunde Estate Grenache Rose inside the bottle. The color is brilliant ruby, reminding you that this low production wine is a rare jewel. Delicious and mouth-watering aromas of fresh watermelon and strawberries welcome you in a way no bovine has ever done before. Those inviting flavors come through clearly as you savor this crisp and richly textured wine. Our Blossom's Rose is a perfect warm weather refresher either on its own or paired with turkey and swiss, or a creamy pasta salad. Give Blossom's Rose a try and find out what the Sonoma Valley already knows: the Kunde family has always had a good eye for cattle." Tim Bell Winemaker
  Bob's Red
Back before Prohibition, most wineries produced simply a red and a white wine, usually named after the proprietor. They used a mix of varieties, suiting different grapes to different soil or climate conditions of the property. Bob's Red is our modern version, an honest red, suitable for most occasions and capable of adding pleasure to any food it's matched with. Enjoy!
  Cabernet Sauvignon
"Head for the hills! The 2005 Kunde Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is the epitome of Sonoma Valley Cabernet; herbal accents of fennel and anise wrap around a core of black raspberry and black cherry flavors so typical of Kunde's rolling hills and steep mountain grape blocks. A touch of Syrah, Malbec, and Petit Syrah adds color and richness to the wine - we'll break with the French blending tradition if it reveals the best of our land and its fruit! This fabulous wine was crafted using 80% hillside fruit. Grill some smoky pork chops stuffed with apples and gorgonzola, open a bottle of Kunde Estate Cabernet, and impress your mouth." Tim Bell Winemaker
  Cabernet Sauvignon - Drummond Vineyard
"Is it any accident that the 2003 Kunde Estate Cabernet Sauvignon - Drummond Vineyard tastes so French? The vines used to make this wine came from cuttings planted on our hills in 1879 by Captain John Drummond; those cuttings came from Chateau Margaux and Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, two of Bordeaux's first growths. Hmmm - coincidence? This elegant wine fills your glass with aromas of cedar and pure raspberry fruit, followed by delicious flavors of raspberry jam and chocolate. A touch of chalky tannins at the finish let you know it still has some life ahead of it. Savor it with rare prime rib or rack of lamb. This is a wine steeped in tradition that makes all of us at Kunde Estate raise a glass and say, "Thanks Captain!" Tim Bell Winemaker
  Chardonnay
"This delightful Sonoma Valley Chardonnay presents generous texture and fine intensity to its mix of citrus, apple fruit and caramel and toast flavors. The lively acidity will allow it to pair well with any seafood or chicken dish, but the wine has the richness to stand up to heartier dishes as well."
  Dunfillan Cuvee
"At Kunde Estate, with over a hundred years of grape-growing experience, we are all about tradition. But sometimes you just gotta try something different that breaks the rules. The 2004 Dunfillan Cuvee scratches that itch - a blend based on pairing Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. It provides a unique taste profile of brooding blackberries, subtle bay leaf, and dark chocolate framed by dusty tannins. Try pairing it with roast beef, roasted root vegetables (yams, parsnips, and carrots), or get wild and try roasted duck with a berry sauce. You can go back to traditional wines some other time." Tim Bell Winemaker
  Fred's White
A surprising mix of flavors and tastes characterize this easy to like 'spring' wine. I find everything from ripe figs to honeycomb enhanced in a lively mouth watering mix. Floral and herbal notes keep the play of flavors exciting from start to finish.
  Gewurztraminer
Richly floral and fruity, people often make comparisons to rose petals and lychee fruit. This wine is an apt match for many spicy cuisines. A touch of sweetness can blunt the fire of the lurking jalapeno or Serrano chili, and the flavorful fruit matches the rich blend of spices found in many Asian dishes. Enjoy!
  Magnolia Lane Sauvignon Blanc
"The 2007 Magnolia Lane is stunning. Take a sniff and be rewarded with a blast of passion fruit, guava, and grapefruit aromas. There's no stopping now - take a sip and wonder if you haven't landed in paradise. Have your oyser knife ready! But if mollusks aren't for you, match this Sauvignon Blanc with platters of grilled shrimp and plenty of lime. It's a guaranteed good time!" Tim Bell Winemaker; Jennifer White Assistant Winemaker
  Merlot
This wine shows the best of the Kunde Estate Merlot vineyards; ripe, red fruits, soft tannins, and a touch of herb. This vintage will drink well now, but provides the acid and tannin structure to reward 3 to 5 years of bottle aging.
  Merlot - Clone 2
"Winemakers love to prattle on about 'clones', genetic subtypes within a given grape variety. Recent years have seen bottlings of various wines focused on selected clones, but we're not aware of anyone doing this with Merlot. Leave it to Kunde Estate to produce another first: Merlot Clone 2! This beautiful wine is pure Merlot, smelling of black currants, tea leaf, and boysenberry, followed by cherry flavors and moderate tannins. Turkey burgers or mushroom risotto would love to be served alongside Kunde Estate Merlot Clone 2." Tim Bell Winemaker
  Petite Sirah - Block 3PS09
Wonderfully spicy in the nose, our 2001 Petite Sirah displays classic varietal character with big, robust, chewy tannins along with a rich strawberry flavor profile and a toasty oak finish. Definitely a wine to pair with richer meat or vegetable dishes. As it ages, a surprising delicacy will appear.
  Primitivo - Block PT02
Big ripe berry fruit, bright acidity, full body and a clean finish make for an enjoyable, straight forward wine. Our Primitivo packs the same concentration of ripe raspberry fruit, cocoa-like spice and briary intensity that we have come to expect from an old-clone Zinfandel. A small amount of Charbono from an adjoining block deepens the color and rounds out the palate of this limited release.
  Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
This Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon represents our best efforts in site selection, vineyard cultivation, and winemaking craftsmanship. Substantial tannins, from both new oak and small, intensely flavored berries will require several years to soften, but the vibrant fruit will reward the patient wine lover. I find flavors of candied currants and cherries supported by oak flavors of vanilla and caramel. What I like best is the incredible depth of flavors the wine displays.
  Reserve Century Vines Zinfandel
"Sleek, rich, and aware of its breeding - that's how we describe the 2004 Kunde Estate Century Vines Zinfandel. Usually we think of these gnarly old vines as crusty characters, but this wine - with it's deep berry flavors, balanced acidity, and beautiful aging structure - comes off as a dapper sophisticate. You'll find it versatile, matching well with a grilled steak, pasta with fresh tomatoes and basil, or grilled barbeque fare. But leave the tails and spats in the closet, at least for the barbeque!" Tim Bell Winemaker
  Reserve Chardonnay
"Imagine a wine with aromas of fresh apples, pears, and yeasty bread dough. Imagine a wine with rich, luscious flavors of baked apples spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, made lively by good natural acidity. Imagine that it is the 2005 Kunde Estate Reserve Chardonnay - wait! No imagination required! That wine is the 2005 Kunde Reserve. Now imagine it with fettucine in cream sauce studded with bay shrimp. Yummy!"
  Sangiovese - Block 2SG05
Sangiovese originally hails from Tuscany, where it grows in rolling red dirt hills among olive groves and ancient villas, and provides the primary varietal for Chianti. Our own vines are located on the valley floor in volcanic, alluvial soils where they enjoy a smiliar 'Mediterranean' climate. Classic aromas of ripe red fruits with a hint of mushroom follow through and deepen on the palate. Bright acidity keeps the wine lively through to the finish, which carries just enough new oak flavors to balance the fruit with pleasing elements of vanilla and caramel.
  Sauvignon Blanc - Block 4SB20
"A pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc. Grapefruit, passion fruit, and minerality are on full display. Unlike some Sauvignon Blancs, our Block 4SB20 doesn't hide its intense, distinctive aromas in Chardonnay-like oak and butter. It accepts that Sauvignon Blanc is all about gooseberry aromas, steely flavors, and intense character. On its own, or with a platter of oysters and grilled shrimp, Block 4SB20 will show you what Sauvignon Blanc is all about!" Tim Bell Winemaker
  Syrah
"Bold, flavorful, and smooth, Kunde Estate's 2005 Zinfandel is like the American West where it grows. It's flavors are up-front, straightforward, and sure of themselves, just what you would want in a good ranch hand mending your fences and herding your cattle. Boysenberry, cardamom, pepper, and a hint of chocolate combine to make a distinct wine that is instantly enjoyable. You might want to think about fresh greens with roasted beets and goat cheese, followed by some slow-cooked smoky ribs. Don't forget the napkins - this is good, messy eatin!" Tim Bell Winemaker
  Vallee de la Lune
Flavors of ripe red fruits serve as the core characteristic for this unique blend of red grape varietals. I have styled this wine after the refreshing wines of the Southern Rhone - medium bodied wines with soft acidity. Enjoyable now, it has the fruit and tannin structure to benefit from two to three more years of bottle aging.
  Viognier
"Watch out when you pour a glass of the 2007 Kunde Estate Viognier! It's packed so full of intense ripe flavors that they may just explode out of the bottle and bowl you over. Exotic, heady aromas of ripe peach, spice, and flowers greet your senses, followed by the taste of orange marmalade, pepper, and the lingering scent of jasmine. Our suggestion is to have a glass while cooking up some delicious risotto studded with fresh peas and red peppers, perhaps with a little shrimp, and then enjoy another glass with the meal. It's a blissful combination." Tim Bell Winemaker
  Zinfandel
  Zinfandel Port
Our Zinfandel Port captures the richness of the harvest and is balanced by the subtle flavors derived during extended aging in neutral oak barrels. Aromas of ripe Zinfandel grapes combine with those of toasted nuts, briar, and vanilla - the sweetness of a summer's day mellowed by calm reflection around the fire.
