Matson Vineyards

Matson Vineyards Matson vineyards is a small family-operated winery located just east of Redding, California. Our original vineyard was planted in 1981, and the winery was officially established in 1984. Our wines are made with grapes from our home vineyards and other exclusively selected vineyards of Shasta County. We grow our grapes in an environmentally friendly manner. The label design for our first wines, Shasta Claret and Shasta Glacier, was originally designed by Stella Matson, the wife of Oscar Matson. Her artwork also became the main element in the label designed for the wine we created in her memory, Stellar Red, which was first produced in the year of her death, 1992. Community participation has always been our tradition, and the biggest event of the year for our winery has been a harvest feast to thank our wonderful friends who have helped us maintain our sanity (to the extent it still exists) during our often chaotic crush.

Directions
In Redding, from Highway I-5 take Highway 44 east (toward Lassen Park) to the Shasta View exit. Turn left onto Shasta View and continue to the stop sign at Old Alturas Rd. Turn right, continue to the flashing red light at the intersection of Old Alturas and Old Oregon Trail, and continue straight for about .7 miles. Turn left on Arapaho Dr., just before the bridge over Salmon Creek, and continue for about 1/4 mile. Take the first driveway to the left and go up the hill to Matson Vineyards. You should soon be greeted by two very friendly, if somewhat pesky, dogs.

  Shasta Claret
Matson vineyards Shasta Claret is a very complex, non-vintage, medium-bodied red table wine uniquely blended from such notable grape varieties as Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Ruby Cabernet and Petite Sirah. Lively on the palate, this wine has pronnounced cherry/berry aromas on a background of subtle green olive and vanilla flavors. It has been allowed to age for an average of over 2 years in oak barrels and is wonderful accompaniment to meat and/or pasta dishes. Since its creation in 1984, Shasta Claret has been the most popular wine among our customers.
  Shasta Glacier
Matson Vineyards 2004 Shasta Glacier is a light and fruity white wine that has been fermented totally dry. This wine is a blend of several varietal grapes, including Colombard, Chenin Blanc, Muscat, and Semillon, and has received a minimum of handling and filtering. The aroma and crisply dry finish of this wine, while usually favored for lighter dishes, will enhance almost any meal.
  Stillwater Port
Our multi-vintage port wine is the fusion of several grape varieties, mainly Ruby Cabernet, Zinfandel, Barbera, and Royalty, chosen to create a balance of rich, plummy, chocolate aromas with lively berry-like scents. Our port is only moderately sweet (5-6 percent residual sugar) and goes satisfying sipped alone by the fire as the evening winds down.
  Viognier
Matson vineyards 2004 Viognier, made entirely from organically grown grapes, exhibits pinapple and tropical fruit aromas, integrated with a creamy character that continues through the long finish.
  Zinfandel
Matson Vineyards Zinfandel is robust, yet elegant, and full of berry and plum fruit, complemented with spice and vanilla oak aromas. An extended macceration of a portion of this wine has given it structure and texture which satisfy immensely throughout its long finish.
