Summit Semillon

Summit Reserve Semillon Wine Details
Price: $17.95 per bottle

Description: This Semillon is quite different from the estate version. When the grapes came in from the vineyard they were whole-cluster pressed, which would assist to reduce the astringency and increase fruit intensity. The grapes for this wine were then selected and put into French oak barrels for six months of oaking, to add greater complexity to the wine. Six months of barrel aging gives a smokiness to the nose which gives way to flavours of gooseberry and pear. The finish is long with hints of citrus. Bottled on January 15, 2005, only 250 cases made.

Varietal Definition
A thin skinned grape producing wines of high extract and flavour but soft acidity. In France it combines with Sauvignon Blanc to make the white wines of Bordeaux, most notably the sweet dessert wines of Sauternes and Barsac. Its thin skin leaves it susceptible to the fungus botrytis* the much sought after 'noble rot' in these sweet wine regions. As a varietal it has fared best in Australia, notably the Hunter Valley, where it produces well-rounded wines with lots of tropical fruits and honeyed tones. Here too it is blended with Chardonnay and oak aged to give an added dimension.
